Unlocking Better Treatments for Childhood Kidney Disease with Precision Medicine

Dr Eve Smith, based at the University of Liverpool and Alder Hey Children’s Hospital has been awarded a Alder Hey Children’s Kidney Fund award of £80,000 to run a clinical treat to target feasibility study across the North West of England and undertake laboratory work to improve monitoring of kidney disease.
Introduction to NEPHROTARGET
Alder Hey Children’s Kidney Fund is excited to announce the launch of NEPHROTARGET, a pioneering research project aimed at transforming the monitoring and treatment of Lupus Nephritis (LN) in children and young adults. Thanks to the generous support of our community, we’re investing in cutting-edge research to improve the lives of young patients facing this challenging condition.
Understanding Lupus Nephritis
LN is a serious complication of Childhood Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (cSLE), an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues. When LN strikes, it targets the kidneys, potentially leading to kidney failure and the need for dialysis or transplantation.
The “Treat-to-Target” Approach
Our project, led by expert doctors at Alder Hey and Manchester Children’s Hospitals, introduces a “treat-to-target” (T2T) approach. This strategy involves setting clear treatment goals and adjusting therapies to meet these targets, which has already shown success in other diseases.
Advancing with Urine Biomarkers
But we’re taking it a step further by integrating ‘urine biomarkers’—indicators in urine that offer a real-time glimpse into kidney health. With a focus on these biomarkers, a paediatric clinical fellow, employed to get trained in research, will explore data from the UK, USA, and South Africa, seeking to align T2T goals with the most accurate markers of kidney function. This approach promises to help improve the monitoring an treatment of LN, tailoring treatments to each child’s unique needs.
The Promise of Personalized Medicine
The potential benefits are enormous. By catching kidney problems early and adjusting treatments precisely, we aim to ward off severe outcomes like kidney failure. Moreover, by showing young patients tangible evidence of their treatment’s effectiveness, we hope to encourage them to stick to their treatment plans.
Implications for the Future of LN Treatment
The implications of NEPHROTARGET go beyond immediate patient care. The insights gained could pave the way for a new era of precision medicine in LN, where treatments are based on biomarker-driven data. This can lead to more effective care and, crucially, better quality of life for our young patients.
Our Vision and Goals
Our vision is clear: this award will enable us to explore the role that urine biomarkers may have within the T2T strategy, potentially enhancing its effectiveness for young patients with LN. Furthermore, this award will facilitate our efforts to evaluate and improve the T2T approach, establishing the groundwork for a future national clinical trial aimed at adopting this sophisticated treatment regimen as the global standard of care.
